Former Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery has parted ways with his agent Scott Boras after a disappointing offseason contract negotiation. Montgomery, who had been represented by Boras, has now enlisted Joel Wolfe and Nick Chanock of Wasserman as his new representatives, as reported by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.

Montgomery was one of the high-profile free agents represented by Boras who struggled to secure deals late into the offseason. Despite a strong performance in the previous season, including a World Series appearance, Montgomery ended up signing a shorter-than-expected one-year, $25 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks just before the start of the season. This deal fell short of initial predictions, such as McDaniel’s projection of a five-year, $106 million contract.

Joining Montgomery in this unexpected turn of events were fellow Boras clients Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, and Matt Chapman, all of whom were anticipated to secure lucrative long-term deals but ended up signing shorter contracts after prolonged periods on the free-agent market. Montgomery’s contract with the Diamondbacks includes a second-year player option, providing flexibility for his future.

Montgomery’s performance in the 2023 season, where he posted a 3.20 ERA over 32 starts and contributed to Texas Rangers’ World Series appearance, highlighted his value as a pitcher.

Originally drafted by the Yankees in 2014, Montgomery made his debut with the team in 2017 before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022 as part of a deal for outfielder Harrison Bader.
