The Montreal Canadiens have opted to exercise the team option on head coach Martin St. Louis’ contract.

Announced on April 17, the Canadiens have chosen to extend St. Louis’ tenure as head coach by picking up the two-year option on his deal, thus securing his position in Montreal for an additional period. St. Louis, who assumed the role of interim head coach on February 9, 2022, succeeding Dominique Ducharme, transitioned to full-time head coach on June 1, 2022, completing his second full season with the Canadiens.

While St. Louis initially had one year remaining on his contract, the Canadiens’ decision to trigger the option extends his contract term to three seasons.

Montreal’s general manager, Kent Hughes, emphasized St. Louis’ willingness to continually evolve and collaborate in addressing team deficiencies, citing his receptiveness to input from various sources, including analytics. Hughes expressed confidence in St. Louis and his coaching staff’s dedication to overcoming challenges and finding solutions to improve the team’s performance.

Echoing Hughes’ sentiments, Canadiens executive vice president of hockey operations, Jeff Gorton, praised St. Louis’ continuous improvement and commitment to the franchise’s objectives. Gorton reiterated St. Louis’ pivotal role as the face of the Canadiens, expressing satisfaction with his leadership.

The decision follows St. Louis’ recent year-end press conference, where he affirmed his passion for coaching and expressed his desire to remain with the Canadiens for the foreseeable future, emphasizing his dedication to the role.

Since assuming the helm as head coach, St. Louis has guided the Canadiens through a record of 75-100-26. Despite the team’s recent season ending without a playoff berth, Canadiens fans have shown optimism and support for St. Louis, expressing excitement about his continued leadership and the potential for future success.

While acknowledging the team’s youthful roster and its ongoing development, fans believe St. Louis is the right individual to lead the Canadiens forward. Anticipation for future playoff appearances under his guidance is palpable among the fan base, highlighting their confidence in St. Louis’ coaching prowess and the team’s trajectory.
