With a record of 11-14 over the past two seasons, including a disappointing finish to the 2023 campaign, the Gators view their underdog status as motivation for the upcoming 2024 season. Mertz emphasized the team’s unity and determination to overcome challenges together.

Mertz, entering his final year of eligibility, is driven by a sense of “unfinished business” and has confidence in Napier’s coaching prowess. He praised Napier’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence as setting the standard for the team.

In his first year as the starting quarterback under Napier, Mertz had an impressive performance, leading the SEC in completion percentage while passing for nearly 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns with minimal interceptions.

Despite facing a tough schedule featuring formidable opponents like Miami, UCF, and Florida State, Mertz sees these challenges as opportunities to showcase the team’s capabilities. He believes that playing at the highest level against top competition is what motivates players at Florida.

On the Paul Finebaum Show, Mertz remained steadfast in his belief in the team’s potential, emphasizing the strong camaraderie and positive energy within the program. He reiterated the team’s focus on proving themselves right rather than silencing external critics.

As the Gators prepare for the demanding season ahead, Mertz highlighted the team’s resilience and determination to succeed, even in the face of adversity. With an intrinsic motivation to excel on the field, the Gators aim to overcome obstacles and silence doubters through their performance.
