New York Yankees roster: Ranking their players for 2023 season

Though any addition would incur significant tax implications, bolstering the roster remains a viable option. As one of the top teams in the American League, an additional starter could elevate the Yankees’ prospects. While Snell dominates discussions, ex-Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery is also in contention. Their landing spots remain uncertain, but Montgomery seeks a long-term deal while Snell leans towards a shorter contract with opt-outs, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Heyman notes, “Star free agent Jordan Montgomery still seeks a long deal while reigning (National League) Cy Young winner Blake Snell is fine doing a short-term deal with opt-outs.” Montgomery could be a substantial acquisition for the Yankees at a lower cost than Snell. With his prior experience in New York, he could provide a reliable addition to the roster.

The Yankees are heavily invested in the 2024 season, especially with the potential departure of Juan Soto in free agency. While signing Montgomery entails significant financial outlay, it could significantly bolster the team’s chances of a deep postseason run. So, why not finalize the deal?
