The Buffalo Bills continue to strengthen an already impressive roster, particularly focusing on bolstering the defense after another disappointing playoff loss to the Chiefs. General manager Brandon Beane addressed this by signing experienced veterans and drafting promising young defenders, including Joey Bosa, Maxwell Hairston, T.J. Sanders, and Landon Jackson. These additions are intended to restore the defense to top-tier status.

However, questions remain at the safety position. With Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp projected as starters, many analysts view Buffalo’s safety group as the weakest in the NFL. While both players bring experience, neither is considered elite. Rookie Cole Bishop, a second-round pick in the 2024 draft, could emerge as a full-time starter in his second season, offering hope for improvement.

Buffalo also signed Darrick Forrest from the Commanders, a part-time starter who flashed potential in 2022 with four interceptions. The team is banking on a combination of youth and depth to solidify the safety position.

Yet, if reinforcements are needed, free agent Julian Blackmon could be a strong option. ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently identified Blackmon, formerly of the Colts, as a good fit for Buffalo due to his ability to play in the team’s split-field coverages and his superior playmaking compared to Hamlin. Blackmon, only 26, has 62 starts under his belt and tallied seven interceptions and 85+ tackles in each of the past two seasons.

Despite his availability, the Bills appear committed to giving Bishop a chance to earn the role during camp. If he struggles, Buffalo may revisit the idea of signing Blackmon or another veteran. While outside observers remain concerned about the safety position, the Bills are confident in their internal options. Time will tell who’s right.
