BREAKING: Oregon lands verbal commitment from 4-star Player

The Oregon Duck men’s basketball team has added a major late commitment to its 2024 recruiting class. After completing an official visit last weekend, 4-star guard Jamari Phillips has decided to join the Ducks.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and hailing from Dream City Christian High School in Glendale, AZ, Phillips is ranked as the top player in Arizona for the 2024 class, the 10th best shooting guard, and the 54th overall prospect in the nation according to 247Sports.

Initially, Phillips committed to Arizona out of high school but later withdrew his commitment and has now chosen Oregon.

Adam Finkelstein, 247Sports’ Director of Scouting, provided a scouting report on Phillips last fall, noting his natural talent and versatility. Phillips is known for his tough shot-making ability, capable of hitting threes and pull-up jumpers when he’s on a roll. He has built up his body to become a powerful guard and can make an impact on defense. His athleticism has improved alongside his strength, making him a greater threat to drive to the basket and more dangerous off ball-screens, as defenders must respect both his shooting and his ability to drive.

Defensively, Phillips can pressure opposing ball-handlers across the length of the court. He shoots with a wide base and a somewhat flat shot but remains a constant threat from both catch-and-shoot and off-the-dribble situations, with shooting percentages of 37% from three-point range and 80% from the free-throw line in EYBL play. To become more efficient, Phillips needs to improve his decision-making, as his shot selection can be questionable, and he had more turnovers than assists in EYBL play. If he can become a more willing ball-mover and leverage his versatility, he will be more challenging to guard and easier to play alongside.

Phillips is now the third verbal commitment in Oregon’s 2024 recruiting class, joining 3-star center Ibrahima Traore and JUCO wing Dez Lindsay. Additionally, Oregon has secured transfer portal commitments from senior guard TJ Bamba, senior guard Ra’Heim Moss, and senior forward Brandon Angel, all of whom are 4-star transfers.
