Yankees Likely to Seek Bullpen Reinforcements at Trade Deadline
With the July 30 MLB trade deadline still over two months away, the New York Yankees are already strategizing for potential moves to bolster their roster. Despite 14 consecutive seasons with an AL Championship, the Yankees are focused on addressing any weaknesses to maintain their strong start in 2024.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic predicts the Yankees will focus on acquiring additional relief pitchers in the upcoming months. He notes, “The Yankees don’t have any glaring needs, but extra bullpen depth is always beneficial, especially in the latter part of the season.” Bowden suggests they might target under-the-radar relievers from non-contending teams, including Nationals righties Derek Law and Dylan Floro, and Cardinals lefty JoJo Romero. However, his top picks are A’s righties Austin Adams and Lucas Erceg, who have excelled in setup roles.
Currently, the Yankees lead the AL East with a 35-17 record, ahead of the Baltimore Orioles by 3.5 games. Their bullpen has been a major strength, boasting a combined ERA of 2.93, second only to the Cleveland Guardians. Despite some injuries, the Yankees’ relief pitchers have performed exceptionally well. Clay Holmes, for instance, has a 1.74 ERA with 13 saves out of 15 opportunities.
Other standout performers include Luke Weaver (2.37 ERA), Nick Burdi (1.86 ERA), and Victor González (2.30 ERA). While some pitchers like Caleb Ferguson (5.29 ERA) and Dennis Santana (5.03 ERA) have struggled with command issues, the bullpen overall remains solid.
The recent return of Tommy Kahnle, who had been on the IL, is expected to further strengthen the bullpen. However, the Yankees have faced significant injuries, losing Jonathan Loáisiga for the season due to Tommy John surgery and still waiting on Scott Effross and Lou Trivino to debut after their surgeries. Additionally, starting ace Gerrit Cole is currently sidelined with elbow issues.
Given their injury history and postseason aspirations, acquiring another reliable bullpen arm appears to be a priority for the Yankees. Whether they make an early move or wait until the deadline remains to be seen, but bolstering their bullpen depth is likely on their agenda.
