Duke Basketball has secured a commitment from Purdue graduate transfer Mason Gillis, marking their second addition from the transfer portal this offseason. Alongside Maliq Brown, who joined the team on Saturday, Gillis brings valuable experience from Purdue’s Final Four roster.

Standing at 6’6″ and weighing 225 pounds, Gillis is renowned for his elite perimeter shooting, boasting a remarkable 47 percent success rate from beyond the arc throughout his career. Notably, during his senior year, he converted 58 of 124 attempts, equating to a stellar 46.8 percent. His on-court toughness is also recognized, complemented by a commendable 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Gillis’s arrival addresses the departure of Jared McCain, who declared for the NBA Draft earlier this month, and enhances Duke’s lineup versatility, capable of playing multiple positions depending on the opponent.

With the addition of Gillis, Duke has now filled two spots from the transfer portal, offsetting the departure of seven players in April, along with others like Kyle Filipowski, McCain, and Ryan Young. The team’s focus remains on securing one more impactful guard via the transfer portal to bolster their backcourt alongside projected starters Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster.

If successful, Duke’s roster will comprise eleven players, with the possibility of rounding it out with two non-scholarship players.
