Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker has lauded Anthony Volpe, the promising infielder for the New York Yankees, for his outstanding performance in the early stages of the 2024 MLB season. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Schumaker described Volpe as a budding superstar, highlighting his exceptional play both defensively at shortstop and offensively at the plate.
Volpe showcased his talent during the Yankees’ recent matchup against the Marlins, contributing significantly to his team’s success. He hit his second home run of the season and matched his previous total of three RBIs in the Yankees’ 7-0 victory over the Marlins on Monday.
The 22-year-old infielder, who won the Gold Glove award last season, has continued to impress in the field with a .967 fielding percentage, demonstrating the same defensive prowess that earned him recognition as the top defensive shortstop in his rookie year. Moreover, Volpe’s offensive performance has been stellar, boasting an impressive slash line of .375/.444/.600 and contributing six RBIs from the fifth through seventh spots in the Yankees’ batting order.
Volpe’s improvement at the plate is particularly noteworthy, as he has shown increased efficiency compared to his rookie season, where his batting average was .209 despite hitting 21 home runs. This positive development bodes well for Yankees manager Aaron Boone and presents a challenge for Schumaker and the Marlins in containing Volpe’s impact on the field.
While much attention has been given to outfielder Juan Soto for his contributions, Volpe’s stellar performances have not gone unnoticed, further solidifying the Yankees’ position as the top team in baseball at present.
