Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Russell Teibert has announced his retirement from professional soccer and will transition into a new role within the club’s front office.

In a statement released on Friday, Teibert expressed his gratitude for his time with the team, stating, “Years ago, I made a promise to myself and our club: I would only be satisfied taking my work boots off when our jersey was in a better place.” He emphasized the journey they had taken together, overcoming challenges and growing stronger as a result. With a sense of pride, Teibert reflected on fulfilling that promise, acknowledging the dedication and effort he had invested into his career.

Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Teibert leaves behind a significant legacy with the Whitecaps, ranking fourth in club history with 301 appearances. He played a pivotal role in the team’s success, contributing to their three Canadian Championship victories, including back-to-back wins in the last two years.

Throughout his remarkable 16-year tenure in Major League Soccer (MLS), Teibert remained loyal to Vancouver, setting records for the most regular-season appearances (253) and starts (193) in club history. His on-field contributions included five goals and 24 assists.

Axel Schuster, CEO and sporting director of the Whitecaps, commended Teibert for his remarkable career and thanked him for his unwavering commitment to the club. Schuster highlighted Teibert’s rare feat of spending his entire career with one team and praised his deep understanding of the club’s history and significance to the community.

Transitioning into his new role, Teibert will bring his wealth of experience and values to the club in a different capacity, continuing to contribute to its success off the field.

In addition to his club career, Teibert represented Canada’s men’s national team, earning two goals and two assists in 27 appearances.

The Whitecaps are set to kick off their 2024 MLS season against Charlotte FC this Saturday.
