Feinsand noted, “The Yankees made a substantial acquisition in securing Soto this offseason, and while it wouldn’t be unexpected to envision the three-time All-Star remaining in the Bronx for the next decade, the prospect of an extension seems remote.” He added, “Soto is poised to pursue one of the most lucrative free-agent deals in baseball history, and even if the Yankees decide to enter negotiations for an extension, it’s improbable that Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, will entertain any discounts prior to free agency.”
While it remains possible that the Yankees could eventually reach an agreement with Soto, it appears unlikely that they will secure a bargain deal. Soto is anticipated to command one of the highest contracts in MLB history. Although the Yankees have the financial means to offer Soto a substantial contract, indications suggest that he intends to explore free agency to assess other opportunities.
Should the Yankees fail to capture the World Series title in 2024 and subsequently lose Soto to free agency the following offseason, it would undoubtedly be a significant blow for the team.
