Russell Martin appears to have clashed with Rangers’ sporting director Kevin Thelwell over last summer’s transfer activities.

The club spent around £20 million and brought in 12 new players, not including Lyall Cameron, who joined on a pre-contract deal. Despite the heavy investment, Rangers have struggled this season, leading many fans to call for Martin’s dismissal as he struggles to maximize the squad’s potential.

In addition to Martin facing pressure, chairman Andrew Cavenagh is also expected to question Thelwell’s transfer strategy, which many view as falling short of expectations at Ibrox.

Russell Martin Reportedly Opposed to Youssef Chermiti Signing at Rangers

Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti

Russell Martin may have strongly objected to Rangers’ signing of Youssef Chermiti, according to former Celtic midfielder Paul Slane. Slane revealed that Martin wasn’t in favor of bringing the 21-year-old striker to Ibrox and may have had a heated disagreement with the club’s leadership over the deal.

While many fans are critical of Martin, they are likely to support him on this issue, questioning the decision to pay £10 million plus add-ons for the Portugal Under-21 international.

Speaking on Open Goal on September 18, Slane stated, “Martin didn’t want [Chermiti]. I’ve heard Martin had a head-to-head clash over that signing.”

Kevin Thelwell Takes Risk with Youssef Chermiti Signing at Rangers

Kevin Thelwell has arguably risked his reputation by bringing Youssef Chermiti to Rangers, despite the striker failing to register a goal or assist during two years at Goodison Park.

Thelwell, who originally signed the 21-year-old while at Everton, chose to reunite with the forward last summer as Rangers sought to bolster their attack following the departures of Hamza Igagne and Cyriel Dessers. Chermiti’s transfer became the most expensive signing at Ibrox in 25 years.

The Portuguese forward, who joined Everton from Sporting CP for £11.5 million in 2023, struggled with fitness last season, missing 24 games due to injuries. Despite limited playing time just 42 minutes in the Premier League and David Moyes being open to letting him go, Rangers took a chance on him.

Chermiti’s performance against Hearts on September 13 highlighted his lack of full match fitness, leaving fans concerned that the club may have been better off investing in a different player.
