Rangers carried out a major squad overhaul during the summer transfer window, but some surplus players still remain on the books.
Under the club’s new ownership led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Rangers brought in 12 new signings, including £8 million striker Youssef Chermiti. While high-profile departures like top scorer Cyriel Dessers occurred, several fringe players failed to secure moves away. As a result, Nedim Bajrami was excluded from the Europa League squad.
Further squad changes are expected next summer, with seven current players entering the final year of their contracts. Key decisions will need to be made as Rangers continue reshaping the team.
Seven Rangers Players, Including James Tavernier, Approaching End of Contracts in 2026
Several key decisions await Rangers as seven players approach the final year of their contracts, with potential departures looming by the end of the 2025/26 season.
James Tavernier
Rangers’ long-serving captain, Tavernier has had a mixed spell while he boasts an impressive record of 133 goals and 142 assists in 524 appearances, he’s also been a target of fan criticism. Earlier this season, he lost his spot to Max Aarons before regaining his place. Some fans believe offering him a new deal with a reduced role could work, while others think parting ways may signal a fresh direction for the club.
John Souttar
Souttar remains the most experienced centre-back in the squad and has performed solidly despite the team’s overall struggles. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, many believe Rangers must extend his deal, as replacing him would be difficult especially if he leaves for free.
Rabbi Matondo
Matondo’s time at Rangers has been largely underwhelming, with a notable exception being a goal against Celtic. A summer exit seems likely unless he produces a dramatic turnaround in form before his deal runs out.
Kieran Dowell
Dowell returned from a loan at Birmingham City but has failed to impress. Left out of the Europa League squad and met with boos from fans, a contract extension seems highly unlikely.
Liam Kelly
Currently serving as backup to Jack Butland, Kelly’s future depends on the club’s transfer plans. He may stay on for depth, but a new signing could lead to his departure.
Bailey Rice
At just 18, Rice has already featured 16 times for the first team. While he shows promise, his long-term role remains unclear. Whether he earns a new contract will likely depend on how much Rangers value his development.
Kieran Wright
Despite being with the club for years and going out on several loans, the 26-year-old goalkeeper has yet to make a senior appearance. It seems probable that he’ll leave at the end of his deal, having never played a first-team match.
