Liverpool completed the signing of Alexander Isak from St James’ Park on deadline day and also secured one of Newcastle’s defensive targets.

Liverpool’s massive summer spending spree culminated in a £130 million deal for Alexander Isak from Newcastle, bringing their total expenditure to over £400 million. The Reds broke the British transfer record twice this window, first by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, then Isak. Among these headline grabs, Giovanni Leoni’s move from Parma for £26 million flew somewhat under the radar. The 18-year-old is expected to provide backup for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate this season. With Liverpool missing out on signing Marc Guehi on deadline day, Leoni might see more playing time than initially expected in the months ahead.

Several clubs, including Newcastle United, had shown interest in Leoni before his move to Anfield. However, the Magpies chose to bring in Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, a player more likely to make an immediate impact under Eddie Howe, unlike Leoni, who may need time to develop.
