With less than two weeks left in the transfer window, Newcastle United’s attacking plans remain finely balanced as they try to keep Alexander Isak while adding reinforcements. Journalist Craig Hope reported before Isak’s explosive social media post that Brentford striker Yoane Wissa is viewed as the Magpies’ “banker” signing. The club are unwilling to sanction Isak’s exit unless Wissa is secured, a stance later echoed in Newcastle’s official response to the striker’s statement.

Still, the club are keeping other options alive. Journalist Marc Mechenoua claims Newcastle have re-entered the race for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, who is also attracting interest from Inter Milan. The Frenchman is reportedly valued at around £35m.

Nkunku’s Chelsea spell has yet to fully ignite, with 18 goals in 62 appearances, but his pedigree is undeniable. The 27-year-old won three Ligue 1 titles at PSG and claimed the Bundesliga Golden Boot in 2022/23 with RB Leipzig, scoring 16 league goals. Despite his £195,000-a-week wages and recent dip in form, Eddie Howe could view him as a player capable of rediscovering his best years at St James’ Park.

If Isak departs, Newcastle would ideally aim to bring in both Nkunku and another striker such as Wissa or Nicolas Jackson. If the Swede stays, Nkunku could emerge as the single marquee addition up front.
