Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer analysed Wolves’ 4-0 loss to Manchester City, pointing to Vitor Pereira’s tactical choices as a key factor in the defeat.

Wolves began the Premier League season with a daunting test against the champions, and despite starting with intensity and pressing high up the pitch, their approach played into City’s strengths.

Lineker argued that Wolves made it too easy for Pep Guardiola’s side by leaving space in behind. “They had a go and pressed high, but that suits Manchester City. Last season, teams that frustrated them were the ones who sat deep and looked to counter. If you press, it’s easier for City,” he explained.

The open setup allowed City to exploit gaps, with Erling Haaland netting twice as they punished Wolves’ expansive play. Lineker noted that the Norwegian striker thrives when opponents take such risks, calling it an invitation for goals.

Although Wolves’ attacking intent might please fans against less formidable opponents, it proved costly against the champions. Pereira may need to adjust his approach, but the 4-0 scoreline arguably flattered City given Wolves’ effort.

With Bournemouth up next, Wolves could reap better results if they maintain the same high-energy style against a less dangerous side.
