A past exchange between Virgil van Dijk and Alexander Isak is being revisited after fresh comments from the Liverpool captain.
Van Dijk has recently urged Liverpool’s hierarchy to bring in another attacker, dropping hints that Isak could be the perfect fit. Speaking to talkSPORT after Liverpool’s Community Shield defeat, he pointed out the recent departures of Darwin Núñez to Saudi Arabia and Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich, suggesting there’s “always room for an attacker” to strengthen the team.
Fans of Newcastle United recall Van Dijk’s pointed interaction with Isak after last season’s Carabao Cup final. While the Dutchman shook hands with various Newcastle players, he appeared to share a longer, more private exchange with Isak, who had scored in the 2-1 victory. At the time, it seemed harmless—until now.
In recent weeks, Isak has stopped training with Newcastle’s main squad and has yet to feature in pre-season, fuelling speculation of his desire to join Liverpool. This is despite previously telling reporters and club legend Alan Shearer that he was happy at St James’ Park.
Manager Eddie Howe has distanced himself from the transfer situation, stressing that the final decision rests with others at the club. He insisted his focus remains on preparing the team for their upcoming match against Aston Villa, saying he’s “not aware” of any definitive orders for Isak to remain.
