Baltimore Orioles pitcher Grayson Rodriguez has successfully undergone surgery on his right elbow, the team announced Monday. Rodriguez began 2025 on the injured list with elbow inflammation, later missing three months due to a right lat strain. Just as he neared a return, another elbow issue forced him to end his season.

The procedure was a cleanup rather than Tommy John surgery, which should allow the third-year starter to be fully ready for spring training in 2026. Despite making adjustments to his pitching mechanics in hopes of staying healthy, Rodriguez will finish the year without throwing a pitch for Baltimore.

A first-round pick in 2018 and one of the Orioles’ top prospects, Rodriguez posted a strong 2024 campaign, going 13-4 with a 3.86 ERA and 130 strikeouts over 116 2/3 innings. Injuries, however, have repeatedly interrupted his career momentum.

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Grayson Rodriguez (30) throws against the Texas Rangers in the first inning at Globe Life Field.

This latest setback comes during a rough season for Baltimore, which sits 12 games below .500 after consecutive playoff appearances. With their postseason hopes dashed, the Orioles traded Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano to the San Diego Padres at the deadline.

The Padres, unlike Baltimore, are making a push for the division title, having won 11 of their last 14 games to move within two of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
