Rangers are working to strengthen their squad after a disappointing start to the Scottish Premiership season under Russell Martin, drawing both opening matches and already trailing the leaders by four points.
Reports from Europe suggest the club has agreed a £2.6m deal with Real Betis for 20-year-old centre back Nobel Mendy, who is set to undergo a medical in Scotland. Betis will retain a 20% sell-on clause in the transfer. While Mendy is a promising left-footed defender a profile currently missing from Rangers’ lineup his limited first-team experience, with just 107 LaLiga minutes and most of last season spent in Betis B, means he may need time to adapt before making a significant impact.
Meanwhile, Rangers are also eyeing Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles, with journalist Alan Nixon reporting that the Northern Ireland international is available for around £8m. The Gers are yet to make an offer, but could move if the asking price drops.
At 20, Charles is the same age as Mendy but boasts considerably more senior experience. Praised by Anthony Elanga, the shot-stopper has impressed in the Championship this season, making standout performances such as an 11-save display against Leicester City. His save percentage, goals prevented, and passing accuracy all compare favourably to current Rangers No.1 Jack Butland, suggesting he could be both a stylistic fit for Martin’s system and a direct upgrade in goal.
Given his proven ability to perform at first-team level, Charles is viewed as a more impactful short-term signing than Mendy, who remains a longer-term development prospect.
