Just over a month after Jrue Holiday was traded from the Boston Celtics to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal for Anfernee Simons, the veteran guard has reminded fans exactly what Boston gave up. His departure wasn’t unexpected, as the Celtics were looking to cut costs to avoid harsh second-apron penalties under the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement. With $104 million remaining on his contract over the next three seasons, Holiday was a logical piece to move.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the trade, Holiday highlighted his adaptability as a key strength. “I think I play every position,” he said via The Rose Garden Report. “I’ve proven that over my career. I’m a complete basketball player… I fit with anyone.”

His comments serve as a pointed reminder of the value Boston lost. Holiday’s versatility made him a critical asset for the Celtics during their 2024 championship run. Whether taking just a handful of shots or playing a central offensive role, he adapted to whatever head coach Joe Mazzulla asked. His ability to guard multiple positions and contribute both with and without the ball was instrumental in Boston’s title run.

Former Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday

One standout moment came in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, where Holiday scored 26 points by expertly moving without the ball and finding open looks. He also had a signature defensive moment with a game winning steal in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Indiana  a play that put him in contention for series MVP.

While his efficiency dipped in the 2024–25 season  his three-point percentage dropping from 42.9% to 35.3% due to injuries Holiday still brought veteran leadership and a flexible mindset. Now with a young, defense oriented Portland squad, his ability to shift roles and fill gaps should continue to be an asset, even if he never quite matches his peak Celtics form.
