Newcastle’s midfield, anchored by Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton, remains one of the strongest in the league and ready to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League. However, beyond that core trio, depth becomes a concern.

Lewis Miley is emerging as a promising young talent, while Joe Willock has struggled to find form, and Sean Longstaff who is entering the final year of his contract has attracted a public £12 million offer from Leeds United.

Amid this situation, Newcastle have reportedly shown interest in unsettled Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian, who previously played for Aston Villa, has struggled to settle in Italy since his move last summer. Journalist Giovanni Albanese reports that Newcastle are among four Premier League clubs tracking Luiz, alongside Everton, Fulham, and Leeds, with Serie A newcomers Como also in the mix.

Fabrizio Romano adds that multiple Premier League clubs have contacted Juventus, and Luiz is widely expected to leave this summer. The 27-year-old needs regular minutes ahead of a crucial World Cup year if he hopes to earn a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad.

Luiz has seen limited action under Juventus manager Igor Tudor just 27 appearances in all competitions and only 45 minutes in the Club World Cup far below expectations after his standout years at Villa.

Balancing Newcastle’s Midfield Options

While interest from Italian sources should be taken cautiously given how often Newcastle’s name is mentioned to drum up bidding wars—Luiz could provide experience, South American creativity, and versatility. He’s capable of filling in for Tonali as a No. 6 or stepping into a No. 8 role like Bruno or Joelinton.

Any move to sign Luiz would likely mean the departure of Willock or Longstaff, with the latter the most probable exit following Leeds’ confirmed bid. Still, Newcastle must be mindful not to block the development of Lewis Miley, who needs more playing time after a limited 2024/25 season.

Ultimately, while Luiz could add needed depth and quality, the club must strike a careful balance between strengthening now and nurturing its future stars.
