Wrexham are actively working on a deal to sign Tom Lawrence, with the midfielder set to leave Rangers on a free transfer this summer.
According to former Manchester United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown who remains well-connected in football Wrexham are among the clubs trying to secure the 31-year-old’s signature. Brown told Football Insider that Lawrence still has the quality to contribute at Championship level, and Wrexham are ready to offer the Wales international a chance to return to his hometown club.
On 21 May, Football Insider revealed that Rangers were willing to let Lawrence leave as part of a major cost-cutting move, helping reduce their wage bill by over £4 million. Now a free agent, Lawrence is expected to attract multiple offers from EFL sides in the coming weeks.
Wrexham, newly promoted to the Championship, are taking advantage of the free agent market as they look to strengthen their squad. The club has also been linked with high-profile names like Jamie Vardy and Ben Davies.
Back in April, Football Insider first reported Rangers’ decision to offload Lawrence, prompting interest from several clubs. Mick Brown emphasized Lawrence’s versatility and goal-scoring ability as major assets:
“Tom Lawrence is still a solid player in his early 30s. He can absolutely contribute at Championship level in midfield and with some goals.
I’m told Wrexham are one of the clubs keen to sign him. They’ve done their homework and are working behind the scenes to reach an agreement.”
Brown added that Wrexham may appeal to Lawrence on both financial and emotional levels:
“Whether it’s a competitive offer or the appeal of playing for his hometown club, Wrexham believe they can persuade him and I think he’ll be open to the move.”
Charlie Savage Also on Wrexham’s Radar
In addition to free agents, Wrexham are willing to spend to bolster their squad. As Football Insider reported on 3 June, they’ve joined Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers in the race to sign Charlie Savage one of the EFL’s standout young midfielders.
Savage, a fellow Wales international, has also drawn interest from clubs abroad. This pursuit aligns with Wrexham’s ambitious plans, with the club reportedly operating with a £30 million transfer budget as they prepare for life in the Championship.
