Despite a solid showing from top prospect Didier Fuentes, the Atlanta Braves couldn’t pull off a win Friday night against the Miami Marlins. The 20-year-old right-hander allowed four runs over five innings in his MLB debut, with the main damage coming from a three-run homer by Miami catcher Agustin Ramirez. Even with his father in attendance to witness the milestone and catch a foul ball Fuentes’ time in the majors may be brief due to upcoming roster changes.

Fuentes showed promise, and Braves manager Brian Snitker praised his maturity and control, but with Atlanta still well behind in the NL East standings and chasing consistency, there’s a real chance Fuentes is sent back to the minors for further development.

Complicating things further is the looming return of veteran outfielder Jurickson Profar. Suspended 80 games earlier this season for performance-enhancing drug use, Profar is wrapping up a hot rehab stint in Triple-A Gwinnett. He’s expected to rejoin the big league club on July 2, provided there are no rainouts. Profar was originally brought in to help bridge the gap while Ronald Acuña Jr. recovered, and although things haven’t gone as planned, he’s now poised to take a spot on the roster.

Atlanta Braves v Miami Marlins

The situation highlights the harsh realities of professional baseball while Fuentes’ debut was a bright moment, it may be short-lived as the Braves make room for a more seasoned, albeit controversial, player.
