Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed a shake-up in the team’s bullpen, noting that Raisel Iglesias will no longer be the definitive closer. While Iglesias “may close games,” he is no longer guaranteed to be the primary ninth-inning option, with Snitker hinting at a possible closer-by-committee approach moving forward.

Just months ago, removing Iglesias from the role would have seemed unlikely. The veteran right-hander delivered an exceptional 2024 season, posting a 1.95 ERA over 69 1/3 innings with strong strikeout and walk rates. He had been among MLB’s most consistent relievers since 2020, boasting a 2.44 ERA across 278 outings.

However, Iglesias has struggled in 2025. Over 24 innings, he’s recorded a 6.75 ERA and allowed seven home runs—matching his highest total in a Braves uniform. While some advanced metrics like his 3.26 SIERA suggest he may be pitching better than his surface numbers indicate, his 21.9% home run-to-fly ball rate and reduced fastball velocity are causes for concern.

The Braves’ decision reflects a larger sense of urgency amid a rough stretch. After rebounding from an 0-7 start to climb above .500, Atlanta has dropped six straight to open June and has won only three of its last 16 games. Now sitting at 27-36, the team is slipping out of playoff contention.

The change may be intended to help Iglesias reset and possibly regain form. With Iglesias in the final year of his contract, his trade value could be important if the Braves become sellers at the deadline.

No clear successor has emerged in the closer role. Since Snitker’s announcement, Pierce Johnson has finished two games but took the loss in both, including a blown save. Though Johnson has a 3.86 ERA and some closing experience, he hasn’t solidified himself as the go-to option. Other candidates like left-handers Dylan Lee and Aaron Bummer, both having productive seasons, could also be considered for late-game situations.

The Braves now appear to be exploring multiple options in the ninth inning, hoping someone steps up as the team tries to salvage its season.
