Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has yet to report to the team’s voluntary workouts, and a recent update suggests his absence could stretch into mandatory sessions. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cook is increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress on a new contract and has no immediate plans to return to the team.

Despite earlier statements from general manager Brandon Beane expressing confidence that Cook would join the team once practices become mandatory, the latest news casts doubt on that expectation. Schefter shared on his podcast that Cook’s relationship with the team appears to have deteriorated, pointing out that the running back has put his house on the market and is distancing himself from the organization.

Cook is reportedly not expected at this week’s minicamp, and while missing voluntary workouts has no consequences, skipping mandatory practices could lead to significant fines. Schefter emphasized the financial risks Cook faces if he continues to stay away from training camp.

Cook has been a key piece of Buffalo’s offense, posting back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons and leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns last year with 16. However, his demand for a contract worth around $15 million per year has reportedly stalled talks, with Beane stating earlier in the offseason that negotiations had ended.

While other members of Cook’s 2022 draft class have secured long-term deals, there appears to be little progress between Cook and the Bills. Schefter described the situation as a potential cloud over the upcoming season, warning that a resolution does not seem close. Some insiders believe the Bills may consider trading Cook before the 2025 season if the standoff continues.
