Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is pushing back on negative perceptions surrounding former Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, emphasizing that he sees a player committed to growth and professionalism.
Schottenheimer praised Pickens’ attitude and involvement as the receiver adjusts to a new team and learns the Cowboys’ system ahead of the 2025 season.
“My experience with him has been nothing but positive,” said Schottenheimer. “He’s been highly focused in meetings, taking detailed notes, and showing a real eagerness to improve. I see someone who’s maturing and dedicated to getting better and we’re excited to see what he can do on the field.”
Pickens was traded to Dallas from Pittsburgh in exchange for third- and fifth-round draft picks, ending a rocky tenure with the Steelers. He’s pushed back against criticism of his character, saying he’s often misunderstood.

“I’m actually a chill guy,” Pickens said. “There’s this wild narrative about me that’s not true. I just love working hard.”
Reports from The Athletic noted that Pickens showed up 40 minutes late to Pittsburgh’s Christmas Day game against the Chiefs, after team inactives had already been announced. He had been expected to test his hamstring injury prior to the game.
A second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Pickens — like quarterback Kenny Pickett, also drafted that year didn’t make it through his rookie contract with the Steelers. Despite missing three games with a hamstring injury last season, Pickens was on pace for a second consecutive 1,000-yard campaign.
