As Jameson Williams nears a crucial point in his rookie contract, the Detroit Lions may already be planning for the future of their receiving corps. According to WalterFootball, the Lions are projected to select Oklahoma wide receiver Deion Burks in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft  a move that could hint at a changing strategy at the position.

Burks, a Michigan native and former Purdue standout, is known for his elite speed and playmaking ability. Although Williams remains under contract through 2025, with a team option for 2026, his production has been solid but underwhelming for a former first-round pick  totaling 83 receptions, 1,396 yards, and 10 touchdowns over three seasons. With Amon-Ra St. Brown now entrenched as the top receiving option, Detroit may be preparing for a post-Williams era starting in 2027.

Walter Cherepinsky of WalterFootball noted that the Lions could use another offensive weapon and described Burks as “small, but with exceptional playmaking skills.” Despite an injury-limited 2024 season at Oklahoma, Burks impressed with 31 catches for 245 yards and three touchdowns in just five games. If healthy, he could boost his draft stock significantly in 2025.

The idea of pairing Burks with St. Brown and Williams could give Detroit one of the league’s most dynamic wide receiver trios, especially under new offensive coordinator John Morton, who’s known for scheming speed into open space. Even if Burks initially slots in lower on the depth chart, his fit in the Lions’ system could be key to maintaining offensive firepower  especially with former OC Ben Johnson now leading the Bears.

Ultimately, this projection isn’t just about replacing Williams  it’s about maintaining Detroit’s elite passing attack well into the future.
