Jayden Meghoma was one of 13 players brought in by Rangers during the summer transfer window, but the early stages of his time at Ibrox have likely left him questioning the move.
The young left-back has shown flashes of potential, though his performances have been inconsistent, featuring both promising moments and defensive lapses. Rangers’ sporting director Kevin Thelwell has come under fire for the club’s summer recruitment, with many seeing the strategy including signing Meghoma as a risky bet on youth.
While much of the blame for Rangers’ poor start to the season has fallen on manager Russell Martin, the squad as a whole hasn’t met expectations. Meghoma, however, has not been among the worst performers. In fact, while on loan from Brentford, he has occasionally stood out as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming campaign.
Still, given the current chaos at the club, Meghoma may privately be wondering if Ibrox was the right move at this stage in his career.
Jayden Meghoma Could Be Having Second Thoughts About Rangers Loan
Jayden Meghoma, who joined Rangers on a season-long loan from Brentford and reunited with former coach Russell Martin, may already be questioning his decision to move to Ibrox.
According to journalist John McGarry in The Scottish Mail on Sunday, the 19-year-old defender likely envisioned a very different experience when he agreed to the move one filled with packed stadiums, regular wins, and a push for silverware.
“Whatever it was that Jayden Meghoma thought he was signing up for, it certainly can’t be what he’s experiencing now,” McGarry wrote, suggesting that the young Englishman could understandably be feeling disillusioned just three months into his time in Glasgow.
Despite Rangers’ struggles this season, Meghoma has been one of the few positives on the pitch. Still, McGarry believes the England youth international may privately wish he had never taken the opportunity.
Rangers supporters will hope that isn’t the case, as Meghoma has shown potential and been a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign.
Rangers Relying on Jayden Meghoma to Maintain Strong Performances
As Rangers prepare to face Livingston on Sunday in search of their first Scottish Premiership win of the season, they’ll be hoping Jayden Meghoma can continue his encouraging form.
Russell Martin’s side currently sit second from bottom in the table after a poor start to the campaign, with few players standing out but Meghoma has been a rare bright spot.
The 19-year-old full-back, who progressed through Tottenham’s academy before joining Southampton, made his Premier League debut against Chelsea in December 2024. An England U-19 international with a history of representing his country from the U-16 level, Meghoma has shown glimpses of real potential despite the difficult circumstances at Ibrox.
His composure and performances in recent matches have been commendable, and it’s vital he stays focused and blocks out the surrounding noise. If he can continue performing at this level, it will benefit both his development and Rangers’ chances of turning their season around.
