Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has acknowledged that managing a deeper squad this season has already forced him to make tough choices including disappointing at least one player.
With increased squad depth comes added pressure to balance opportunities and keep players satisfied, something that won’t always be possible. Speaking after recent scrutiny from pundit Theo Walcott on Match of the Day, who questioned Howe’s willingness to make hard calls on team selection, the manager revealed he’s already had to make such a decision.
Howe admitted that part of his job involves making difficult selection choices, even if it means leaving out players who feel they deserve to play an unavoidable challenge as Newcastle push forward in a demanding season.
Howe Hails Lascelles’ Attitude Despite Champions League Snub
Eddie Howe has praised Jamaal Lascelles for his professionalism and determination, even after the defender was left out of Newcastle United’s Champions League squad a decision that understandably left him disappointed.
Lascelles, who played a key role in Newcastle’s previous European campaigns, was a notable omission from the 21-man squad due to competition for places and UEFA restrictions. Speaking ahead of the Magpies’ Carabao Cup clash with Bradford City, Howe acknowledged the emotional impact on the 31-year-old.
“He was obviously disappointed he’s a natural competitor and wants to be involved like everyone else,” Howe said. “But coming back from a serious knee injury, he’s done brilliantly. He’s in great physical shape.”
The manager added that the decision wasn’t a reflection of Lascelles’ ability but rather the result of strong competition in central defence. “We have excellent defenders at the club, and Jamaal is certainly one of them,” Howe concluded.
Jamaal Lascelles Should Be Given Carabao Cup Start
With Jamaal Lascelles excluded from Newcastle’s Champions League squad and currently out of the Premier League starting lineup, it’s crucial that he gets a chance to play in the upcoming Carabao Cup match.
Newcastle face Bradford City in the third round on Wednesday, and it would be ideal to see Lascelles included in Eddie Howe’s starting XI. This would mark his first competitive start since a serious knee injury in March 2024.
Lascelles came off the bench in the recent 0-0 draw against Bournemouth, but the Carabao Cup presents the perfect opportunity for him to step up. Fabian Schär is sidelined with a concussion, and Howe is likely to rest Malick Thiaw ahead of the Arsenal game, opening the door for Lascelles to return to the defense.
If given the chance, Lascelles can prove his value to Newcastle once again an opportunity he must seize, especially in a season where such chances might be limited.
