Joe Rothwell’s time at Rangers is off to a rough start, and his latest social media behavior may have added more fuel to the fire surrounding his place in the squad.

The English midfielder, who joined from Bournemouth this summer with high expectations, has underwhelmed with his performances so far. His displays on the pitch have drawn criticism, and with Rangers still winless in the league, fans have begun calling for him to be dropped from the starting lineup.

Now, Rothwell may have made his situation even more difficult after engaging in questionable social media activity that appears to hint at discontent with manager Russell Martin  potentially putting his future role in the team at risk.

Joe Rothwell Signals Frustration with Russell Martin Over Playing Position

Joe Rothwell in Rangers action

Russell Martin’s rocky start as Rangers manager continues, with his job increasingly under threat amid growing unrest within the squad.

One sign of this unrest comes from Joe Rothwell, who has expressed dissatisfaction with Martin’s tactics on social media. Rothwell liked an Instagram post by former teammate Barry Douglas, who criticized how players are being used out of position at Rangers. Douglas highlighted that he performs best in certain areas of the pitch and is among the quickest players he’s known  something that hasn’t been reflected in his Rangers role.

By liking this post, Rothwell appears to be sending a clear message of frustration at Martin, who has been deploying him deeper in midfield rather than in a more advanced role. Rothwell’s action makes it obvious he’s unhappy with his current role and openly challenges his manager’s decisions.

Joe Rothwell Among Rangers’ Biggest Disappointments This Season

Joe Rothwell was expected to add experience and creativity to the Rangers midfield but has so far fallen well short of those expectations.

His performances have been underwhelming, leaving fans frustrated with his impact on the pitch. Despite having Premier League experience, Rothwell’s stats reflect a lackluster contribution, including just two assists, a duel success rate of 52.4%, and 50% accuracy on long balls.

Although Rothwell may feel he’s being played out of position, his overall showing at Ibrox has been a major letdown for the club and its supporters.
