Newcastle United are preparing a record-breaking bid to sign Barcelona playmaker Dani Olmo, according to Spanish outlet E-Noticies. The report states there is “complete certainty” Olmo will depart the Camp Nou this summer if a strong offer is made, with Newcastle ready to meet the €90 million (£78m) asking price.
Both clubs were busy in the recent transfer window, with Newcastle bringing in key names such as Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa, and Aaron Ramsdale, while Barcelona added Joan Garcia, Roony Bardghji, and Marcus Rashford as they target domestic and European glory.
Newcastle aiming for a Premier League top-four finish and Champions League success will face Barcelona at St. James’ Park later this week. Ahead of the clash, attention has turned to Olmo, who could become Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever if the move goes through.
Currently, that title belongs to Woltemade, who joined from VfB Stuttgart for €79 million (£68.3m). Before him, Alexander Isak held the record, but he was sold to Liverpool on deadline day this past summer.
Olmo, once the youngest foreign debutant at Dinamo Zagreb, is seen as a marquee addition that could elevate Newcastle’s ambitions at both domestic and European levels.
Dani Olmo’s Barcelona Future Uncertain as Newcastle Interest Grows
According to E-Noticies, Dani Olmo wants to succeed at Barcelona by securing a regular starting spot under manager Hansi Flick. However, with Flick mostly using the 27-year-old as a substitute, consistent playing time has been hard to come by. Since joining from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2024, Olmo started just 13 LaLiga games and six Champions League matches last season. This season, he’s only started once in LaLiga, with Fermin Lopez often preferred in his position due to impressive performances.
Olmo is reportedly open to leaving Barcelona if he cannot cement a regular place in the starting lineup in the near future. Sources close to Barcelona president Joan Laporta have expressed surprise at Olmo’s struggles to become a key player, as many had expected him to be a fixture under Flick.
Meanwhile, trusted journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Newcastle chose not to pursue a transfer deal involving Olmo after signing Malick Thiaw from AC Milan. Barcelona also face doubts over one of their top players’ availability for the upcoming Champions League clash against Newcastle, with Flick reportedly unhappy about the situation.
On their side, Newcastle are focused on retaining a key player who has attracted interest from Manchester City.
