Former Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson has emerged as a top transfer target for Manchester United, following a standout spell at Nottingham Forest. Anderson, who came through Newcastle’s academy and made 55 senior appearances, was sold to Forest for £35 million in July 2024 as the Magpies looked to meet Profit and Sustainability (PSR) requirements. In a simultaneous deal, goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos joined Newcastle for £20 million.
Since the move, Anderson has flourished playing a key role in Forest’s Europa League qualification and recently earning his first England caps under Thomas Tuchel, impressing with back-to-back Man of the Match performances.
Former Man United scout Mick Brown claims the Red Devils are seriously considering Anderson, describing him as a perfect fit for their midfield needs. Forest now reportedly value the 22-year-old at £70 million, double what they paid just a year ago.
Despite speculation, Newcastle do not have a buy-back clause or even a sell-on clause in the deal meaning they won’t benefit financially if Anderson makes a high-profile move. That omission could prove costly, especially as the midfielder’s reputation and market value continue to rise. Anderson’s sale, alongside that of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton, helped Newcastle stay compliant with financial regulations but Anderson’s success is now seen as a decision that may come back to haunt them.
