Newcastle United have received a boost following the summer transfer window, with fresh optimism surrounding a Premier League talent whose move fell through on deadline day.

After a challenging start to the summer, the Magpies had a successful transfer period, signing six senior players, including record signing Nick Woltemade, who may feature against Wolves this Saturday. New additions like Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, and Yoane Wissa have also strengthened Newcastle’s attack.

Among their targets was Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, a £34m deal that collapsed in 2024 due to disagreements over the fee. Thiaw was considered as an alternative to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who nearly joined Newcastle last summer before Palace rejected bids up to £70m.

Recent updates on Guehi’s transfer situation have now provided Newcastle with renewed hope ahead of the January window.

Liverpool Unlikely to Renew Pursuit of Marc Guehi Before Next Summer

Liverpool agreed a £35m deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi on deadline day, but the transfer fell through as Palace couldn’t secure a replacement.

The 25-year-old defender, who has just one year left on his contract and has confirmed he won’t be extending it, is expected to be available for a move in January. However, according to The Times, Liverpool won’t reopen negotiations for Guehi during the winter transfer window, instead planning to pursue him on a free transfer next summer.

This decision could give Newcastle an advantage in signing Guehi, a player they targeted strongly last summer. Yet with Malick Thiaw already at the club, it remains uncertain if Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is keen to add another defender.

If Howe does manage to bring Guehi in, it would significantly strengthen Newcastle’s defense and potentially allow him to focus on other transfer priorities.

Marc Guehi Reflects on His Missed Newcastle Move in 2024

While Newcastle United may not have an urgent need for Marc Guehi, the defender would still be a valuable addition to the squad. As a young club captain who recently helped Crystal Palace secure their first major trophy, signing him would be an obvious boost if the chance arises.

Had Guehi joined Newcastle last year, he might have been part of the squad that lifted the Carabao Cup in March. Instead, Dan Burn and Fabian Schär played key roles in securing the club’s first trophy since 1969.

Guehi addressed the transfer speculation in a November interview with Sky Sports. He admitted that the rumors could be distracting but emphasized the importance of his support system.

“When you’re constantly reading things about yourself, it can be distracting for some people,” Guehi said. “But I’m just glad I have a good support system around me my family, the club, my friends. It’s important to have that humility and focus on the task at hand.

“Palace have given me every single thing in the world and I’m completely grateful to them. I just want to repay them by doing my absolute best.”
