Rangers are hoping to bring in a new midfielder before the 11pm transfer deadline but may need to move a player out first to make room.

Manager Russell Martin is under heavy pressure after a poor start to the Scottish Premiership season, with four straight draws leading to calls for his dismissal. While midfielder Nico Raskin is expected to remain at the club, Martin is still looking to strengthen the midfield before the window closes.

According to L’Équipe, Rangers have shown late interest in Pierre Ekwah, a former Sunderland midfielder now playing for Saint-Étienne. Spanish side Levante are also reportedly in the mix for the 23-year-old. However, for Rangers to move forward with a deal, they’ll need to offload one of their current players.

Ekwah joined Saint-Étienne permanently earlier this summer in a £6 million move from Sunderland after a loan spell. But following the French club’s recent relegation to Ligue 2, he could be on the move again.

The Frenchman’s career path includes stints at some of England’s top youth academies:

  • Chelsea (2018–2020)
  • West Ham United (2020–2023)
  • Sunderland (2023–2024)
  • Saint-Étienne (2024–Present)

Ekwah’s versatility is one of his standout qualities. Primarily a defensive midfielder, he’s also capable of filling in at centre-back. His playing style reflects his admiration for football legends—particularly Zinedine Zidane. In a 2021 interview, Ekwah described himself as a creative and composed midfielder, citing Zidane, Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, and Claude Makelele as his footballing idols.

Aside from his technical attributes, Ekwah’s durability is another major asset. Across the last two seasons, he’s featured in 73 matches and has avoided major injuries—making him a reliable option in high-intensity campaigns.

With Rangers entering the Europa League and preparing for the demanding Thursday/Sunday schedule, having a consistent and available midfielder like Ekwah could be a valuable addition. As the transfer window nears its close, he may offer a much-needed boost for a Rangers side in need of fresh energy and renewed optimism.
