Rangers manager Russell Martin is under growing pressure after his side’s humiliating 6-0 defeat to Club Brugge on Wednesday, which sealed a 9-1 aggregate Champions League exit. While defensive issues remain glaring, the lack of firepower in attack is also a major concern.
Danilo was substituted before the hour mark in Belgium, underlining Rangers’ need for a reliable No.9. That has led the club to open talks with Everton over a loan move for Yousef Chermiti, the 21-year-old striker signed from Sporting Lisbon in 2023 for £12.5m.
Chermiti was left out of Everton’s Carabao Cup squad against Mansfield Town, sparking speculation over his future. The Portuguese forward struggled for minutes last season, making just four Premier League substitute appearances totalling 49 minutes – and has yet to score in 24 senior outings for the Toffees.
With Everton also signing Thierno Barry this summer, Chermiti has slipped further down the pecking order. Rangers now see him as a potential solution to their attacking problems, though relying on a striker without a senior goal could prove a high-risk move.
For Martin, whose job is hanging by a thread, this signing may represent his final roll of the dice to turn Rangers’ season around.
