Newcastle United have suffered a major setback with Anthony Gordon now suspended following his red card in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool on Monday night.

Gordon was shown a straight red after a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk during the first half at St James’ Park. Referee Simon Hooper initially issued a yellow card but upgraded it to red after reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor, deeming the tackle serious foul play.

As a result, Gordon will miss three domestic matches:

  • Leeds United (Away)  August 31
  • Wolves (Home)  September 13
  • Bournemouth (Away)   September 20

However, the 24-year-old will still be eligible to feature in Newcastle’s Champions League opener in the week of September 15.

He’ll also be available for domestic action again in the Carabao Cup third round, scheduled for the week starting September 22.
