Former Newcastle United midfielder Nicky Butt has shed light on the club’s difficult summer transfer window, pointing to both financial restrictions and a lack of city appeal as key reasons why the Magpies have missed out on several high-profile targets.

Eddie Howe’s side have been frustrated in their pursuit of the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, James Trafford, and Benjamin Sesko. While Newcastle did manage to secure Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55m and Malick Thiaw from AC Milan for £34.5m, many fans remain disappointed by the long list of near misses.

Speaking exclusively to Chronicle Live via BetMGM, Butt said Financial Fair Play and Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) have clearly hampered Howe’s plans. However, he also argued that some players underestimate Newcastle’s size and significance because of its location.

“Until you’re actually in the club, you don’t realise how big it is or how passionate the supporters are,” Butt explained. “But some players just see that it’s not London or one of the ‘glamour’ cities. That puts Newcastle at a disadvantage unless they offer higher wages.”

Butt added that while financial incentives play a role, Newcastle should aim to attract players motivated by football rather than money. “In the long run, if a player doesn’t want to come for the right reasons, you’re better off without them,” he said.

Alexander Isak looks on as he arrives

The comments come amid ongoing striker concerns at St James’ Park. With Alexander Isak’s future uncertain, Anthony Gordon was deployed as a makeshift No.9 in the goalless draw against Aston Villa, leaving fans eager for a new signing before the transfer deadline.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with a £60m move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, though the Bees will only sanction a deal if they secure a replacement. PSG forward Gonçalo Ramos has also been considered, but the Portuguese striker has signaled he will stay in Paris this summer.
