The Boston Celtics’ challenging offseason has sparked a wave of trade speculation, with Jaylen Brown’s name frequently surfacing in rumors. As the team balances luxury tax concerns and Jayson Tatum’s recovery from injury, Sports Illustrated’s Mark Morales-Smith suggested a high-profile deal that would send Brown to the Charlotte Hornets.
Proposed Trade Package
- Celtics receive: LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges
- Hornets receive: Jaylen Brown, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser
The move would shave about $7.5 million from Boston’s payroll while giving them two proven starters to help weather Tatum’s absence in 2025-26. Ball, a dynamic playmaker averaging 25.2 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.9 rebounds last season, could step in as a lead star. Bridges, who averaged 20.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, adds athleticism and defensive versatility, while maintaining the chemistry he’s already built with Ball. Both players are under contract for multiple years, offering long-term stability once Tatum returns.
For Charlotte, acquiring Brown provides a legitimate franchise cornerstone. A four-time All-Star and 2024 Finals MVP, he averaged 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists last season. Alongside Brown, Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard would bring scoring punch and three-point shooting to the Hornets’ backcourt, having averaged 14.3 points on 40.7% shooting from deep. Sharpshooter Sam Hauser, who knocked down 41.6% of his threes last season, would further strengthen Charlotte’s perimeter game.
Why It Works And Why It Doesn’t
The deal would represent a culture shift for the Hornets, adding championship experience and veteran leadership to a young roster. For Boston, it addresses salary concerns while keeping them competitive during Tatum’s recovery.
However, the lack of draft picks in the package could make it less appealing for the Celtics. Given Ball’s injury history and Bridges’ off-court controversies, Boston may hesitate to move both Brown and Pritchard without future assets included. With the 2025-26 season shaping up as a transition year, the Celtics could also choose patience, preserving their core until Tatum’s return in 2026-27.
