The Boston Celtics will help launch a new chapter in NBA broadcasting when they face the New York Knicks in Amazon Prime Video’s first Friday night doubleheader on Oct. 24. The matchup is a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Semifinals, where New York stunned Boston in six games.

That series was painful enough for Celtics fans, but the bigger blow came when Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles  an injury that clouded the team’s dynasty hopes. Boston now enters the 2025–26 season with more uncertainty than ever.

The other half of the opening-night doubleheader will feature another postseason rematch: the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves. Prime Video will host Friday night doubleheaders throughout the season as part of its new NBA broadcast deal.

The Celtics will also feature in the Emirates NBA Cup, placed in Eastern Conference Group B alongside the Magic, Pistons, 76ers, and Nets. Two of Boston’s Cup games will be nationally televised  Nov. 26 vs. the Pistons on ESPN, and a road clash with the 76ers on Prime Video.

While a 20th banner might not be realistic this year, Boston could still contend for its first NBA Cup, following in the footsteps of past winners  the Lakers and Bucks.

Horford’s Future Still in Limbo

Meanwhile, veteran big man Al Horford’s future remains unsettled. Celtics president Brad Stevens has acknowledged it’s unlikely the 39-year-old returns to Boston. While many expect him to join the Golden State Warriors, retirement is reportedly still under consideration.

Boston Celtics center Al Horford.

According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Golden State appears to be operating as if Horford will be part of their plans, though the situation is on hold until restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga’s contract is resolved.

Last season, Horford averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and shot 36.3% from three. His shooting, defense, and veteran leadership could make him a perfect fit alongside Draymond Green, while also mentoring younger players like Quinten Post.

For now, Horford waits — but all signs still point toward a move to the Bay over walking away from the game.
