The 2025/26 Premier League season is here, and Newcastle United fans are hoping to build on last year’s success.
The Magpies ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy and secured Champions League qualification, but off-field setbacks have dampened the mood ahead of their opener.

Newcastle’s transfer window has been frustrating, with targets like Benjamin Sesko choosing Manchester United and Joao Pedro plus Liam Delap joining Chelsea. Meanwhile, star striker Alexander Isak has asked to leave, attracting strong interest from Liverpool and refusing to return to first-team action.

Despite the turbulence, four Newcastle players head into the new campaign with a point to prove:

Nick Pope during a friendly between Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid.

  • Nick Pope  Signed for £10m in 2022, Pope reclaimed his spot from Martin Dubravka last season and will start as No.1. With Champions League football returning and Aaron Ramsdale now providing competition, the 33-year-old must stay sharp to keep his place. Eddie Howe has called him a “giant” and backed him to deliver.Sven Botman during a friendly between Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid.
  • Sven Botman After two injury-hit seasons, the Dutch centre-back aims to stay fit and rediscover his outstanding 2022/23 form. He is expected to start against Aston Villa in the opener.

Anthony Gordon during a friendly between Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid.

  • Anthony Gordon  Following a 28-goal-involvement 2023/24 season, Gordon’s form dipped last term due to suspension and injury. The winger must regain consistency to keep Harvey Barnes from taking his spot.

William Osula during a friendly between Newcastle United and RCD Espanyol.

  • William Osula  The young striker had limited chances last season but could benefit from Isak’s uncertain future. Impressive in flashes but still goalless in pre-season, he needs to prove he can deliver in competitive matches or risk a loan move.

With new challenges ahead, these four players will be under the spotlight as Newcastle begin their Premier League campaign.
