When Alex Anthopoulos took over as Atlanta Braves GM, improving the team’s international scouting was a priority, but the returns in free agency have been mixed, with several high-bonus prospects like Ambioris Tavarez, Diego Benitez, Douglas Glod, Luis Guanipa, and Jose Perdomo struggling to develop. Now, 16-year-old outfielder Diego Tornes may be poised to change that trend.

Signed in January for $2.5 million, Tornes was regarded as one of the top bats in his class  a switch-hitter with a strong plate approach and a projectable 6’4″ frame. Though still very early in his career, his debut in the Dominican Summer League (DSL) is offering glimpses of his potential.

In 32 games, Tornes is hitting .279 with a .395 on-base percentage and a .402 slugging percentage. He hasn’t homered yet but has displayed notable speed with 24 stolen bases and five triples. His discipline at the plate and ability to reach base suggest strong baseball instincts for his age.

While DSL stats should be taken with caution, Tornes is already translating his physical tools into game performance  a key early step in development. If he continues to make consistent contact and grows into his frame with added power, the Braves may finally have a future star from their recent international signings.
