Former US prodigy Freddy Adu believes Giovanni Reyna should leave Borussia Dortmund and join Rangers to reignite his career and boost his chances of making the US national team for next year’s World Cup.
Reyna, once hailed as one of America’s brightest talents, made a big impact when he broke into Dortmund’s first team in 2020, but has struggled for regular minutes in recent seasons. He spent the latter half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest but failed to cement a consistent starting role.
Adu, who played alongside Reyna’s father Claudio during the elder Reyna’s successful spell at Ibrox from 1999 to 2001, thinks a move to Rangers would give the 21-year-old the regular playing time he desperately needs.
“If Gio goes somewhere like Rangers, it could do wonders for him,” Adu said. “He’d get the minutes, be a key player, and really develop. You don’t get better sitting on the bench you improve by playing regularly. At Rangers, he could start consistently without the pressure of being dropped for every mistake, and that stability would help him grow and prepare for the World Cup.”
Adu, who admits Reyna’s current situation at Dortmund “breaks his heart,” stressed the midfielder’s importance to the US squad, calling his skill set “pivotal” to their success. He urged Reyna to leave Dortmund for a club where he would be an integral part of the team rather than a fringe option.
