Former Rangers, Sheffield United, and Leeds United defender Kyle Bartley has retired from professional football at age 34 due to a serious knee injury he couldn’t overcome.

After a 16-year career spanning 407 appearances, Bartley’s most recent club, West Bromwich Albion, confirmed the news in a statement alongside his farewell message. Having joined West Brom in 2018 from Swansea City, he played for just three clubs permanently, with six loan spells in between  including two each at Rangers and Sheffield United, and one at Leeds United.

In his statement, Bartley said he felt “fortunate” to have represented several top clubs, singling out West Brom as “a particularly special place.” He admitted the knee injury he suffered last season forced him into “the difficult decision” to retire, despite extensive rehabilitation efforts.

Bartley expressed gratitude to teammates, staff, and supporters, noting he will remain a regular at The Hawthorns and continue backing manager Ryan Mason. He also thanked his family, saying they are now “all fans” of the club.

The defender underwent knee surgery last year but continued to struggle with pain, though he still made 31 appearances and captained the side 27 times last season. His career was repeatedly interrupted by knee problems, including a medial ligament injury in 2011 that ended his loan stint at Rangers prematurely.
