The New York Rangers are aiming to solidify their blue line as they push for a playoff run and could do so by acquiring San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro. While they signed shutdown defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov this offseason, they also traded away K’Andre Miller, who brought offensive capabilities from the back end.

Trade Proposal:

  • Rangers receive: Mario Ferraro, 2026 fourth-round pick (from Florida)
  • Sharks receive: Carson Soucy, 2026 first-round pick (from Carolina)

Ferraro, 26, is in the final year of a four-year, $13 million contract and has been the subject of trade speculation. He posted 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) in 78 games last season on a struggling San Jose team and could thrive in a better system like New York’s. He would be expected to help fill the offensive void left by Miller’s departure.

To balance salaries, New York would send defenseman Carson Soucy, who is also entering the final year of his $9.75 million deal. Soucy, who tallied 13 points in 75 games last season, could become a trade asset for San Jose at the deadline.

Ferraro Open to Move

Though Ferraro hasn’t requested a trade, NHL insider David Pagnotta reports that he’s open to a fresh start. With San Jose recently adding three defensemen, moving Ferraro may be well-timed. Multiple teams have shown interest, and the Rangers are among those keeping tabs.

Rangers Focused on Defensive Overhaul

The Rangers’ offseason strategy has revolved around improving their defense. General Manager Chris Drury emphasized the importance of strengthening their zone coverage, with Gavrikov expected to play a major role alongside right-handed defensemen like Adam Fox.

Last season, the Rangers ranked 19th in goals allowed, and with Gavrikov in place, attention has now turned to finding a strong second left-shot defenseman. Ferraro fits that mold and has already been linked to the team in various reports.

NHL analyst Shayna Goldman of The Athletic noted that Ferraro could be a valuable short-term addition or even a trade-deadline rental. He has played 408 NHL games, recording 91 points (17 goals, 74 assists) in his career.
