As the Boston Celtics prepare for a challenging season ahead—one marked by the loss of Jayson Tatum to a torn Achilles and major roster changes—the team appears to be shifting its focus toward rebuilding rather than competing. Following trades involving Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, it’s clear Boston is aiming to secure a top draft pick, with eyes set on long-term success beyond 2027. Playoff hopes for the upcoming year are slim.

With the franchise moving in a new direction, the roster is undergoing a major transformation. One familiar face notably absent from any team as August begins is veteran center Al Horford.

Al Horford Still Without a Team in August

The 39-year-old, who helped the Celtics win a championship and spent seven seasons with the team across two stints, is currently a free agent. Though he’s expected to sign with a team before the season starts potentially the Golden State Warriors it seems likely this will be his final year in the league unless something unexpected happens.

Given Boston’s focus on developing its young core, retaining the aging Horford didn’t align with their current plans. Now, he’s free to chase another title or perhaps secure one last significant contract, though his current goals remain unclear.

Horford, an 18-year NBA veteran known for his leadership, professionalism, and reliable play, will be remembered as a key figure in recent Celtics history. He first joined the team in 2016, returned after a brief departure, and eventually claimed his only NBA title with Boston cementing his legacy in the city.

Fans continue to root for Horford to get one final shot at competing for a championship. While he’s still on the market for now, many expect him to sign with a team by mid-August as the new season nears.
