Rangers are being urged to consider a move for Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy, with strong belief that the veteran striker could be a major force in Scottish football despite his age.
Now a free agent after a storied career with Leicester where he famously won both the Premier League and FA Cup the 38-year-old is yet to confirm his next destination. With 200 goals for the Foxes to his name and a reputation for pace and ruthless finishing, Vardy is still seen as a dangerous frontman even as he nears 39.
Former Rangers left-back David Robertson, who won six titles at the club, believes Vardy could play a key role at Ibrox for up to three years. Until a signing like Vardy materializes, Robertson expects both Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane to remain at the club, despite ongoing transfer speculation.
Speaking to Ibrox News, Robertson said:
“I think he’d tear it up in Scotland. His arrival would lift the whole club. He still has the pace, and no disrespect to other Scottish teams, but his ability to play off the last defender and get in behind would cause all sorts of problems. If Rangers played more directly with him, he’d make a huge difference.”
He added that Vardy could easily extend his career in Scotland and that quality strikers like him are hard to come by these days. Robertson also noted that the current transfer landscape is more challenging than it was during his playing days when Rangers attracted stars like Gazza, Mark Hateley, and Brian Laudrup.
Celtic Legend Also Endorses Vardy
Interestingly, Vardy has also been linked to Celtic. Last month, former Hoops midfielder Peter Grant told Go Radio he believed Vardy would be a smart signing for Brendan Rodgers who previously managed him at Leicester.
Grant said:
“No doubt about it whoever signs Jamie Vardy is getting someone who still has his pace and hunger. He proved last season he’s still sharp, and he brings a real lift to those around him. His energy and personality can change a dressing room. People might question his age, but believe me, he’d still score plenty of goals in Scotland.”
With admiration from both sides of the Old Firm divide, Vardy’s next move could have a major impact on the Scottish Premiership.
