Birmingham City are awaiting clarity from Rangers regarding the futures of Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies, both of whom spent last season on loan at St Andrew’s under Chris Davies, contributing to the club’s League One title-winning campaign.
Following their return to Ibrox, the duo have been in limbo, awaiting a decision from new manager Russell Martin, who has now been in charge for nearly two months. Yet, there’s been no clear direction on whether either player features in his long-term plans.
Birmingham remain interested in signing both players, each entering the final year of their Rangers contracts. However, progress has been slow, with Rangers reportedly seeking transfer fees as they assess their squad under Martin’s leadership.
While Dowell has featured during Rangers’ pre-season, Davies is still recovering from injury. Both players are said to be open to a return to Birmingham, should an agreement be reached.
Davies was a key figure in Birmingham’s record-breaking promotion push, while Dowell brings experience from a previous Championship promotion with Norwich City.
Meanwhile, Birmingham’s sporting director Craig Gardner is also working to trim the squad. Tyler Roberts and Dion Sanderson, who were loaned out late last season, are unlikely to feature in future plans. Though there is overseas interest in both players, no firm offers have materialized, as Birmingham looks to balance the books following a busy month of new signings.
