Jayson Tatum has been seen walking without a protective boot, giving Boston Celtics fans renewed hope about his recovery. After a tough offseason where the Celtics offloaded several key players to avoid the NBA’s second apron tax, the team is now facing the challenge of moving forward without Tatum, who suffered a torn Achilles during their playoff loss to the New York Knicks. He’s expected to miss the entire 2025–26 season.
Tatum’s appearance without a boot at a recent event shared by @thejaysontatumfoundation on Instagram and reposted by House of Highlights on X sparked excitement among Celtics supporters. Fans took to the comments with optimism, with one saying, “Hope he comes back better than ever,” while another speculated, “This means the tear wasn’t too severe. He’ll return to his old self.”
Just a day earlier, Tatum had also been spotted without a boot in a St. Louis gym, as seen on @celtics.everyday via saintlouismbb, further fueling positive reactions. Being boot-free less than three months after suffering one of basketball’s most serious leg injuries is seen as a strong sign of progress in his rehab.
A Transition Period for the Celtics
Only a year ago, Boston looked like a rising dynasty, led by Tatum and Jaylen Brown and fresh off a championship in 2024. But Tatum’s injury in the Knicks series (which Boston seemed likely to lose regardless) changed the team’s trajectory.
With Tatum out for the upcoming season, the Celtics now face a dramatically altered lineup, including a frontcourt featuring Georges Niang and Luka Garza. While Jaylen Brown and Derrick White remain strong contributors, it’s unlikely Boston will be a true contender in 2025–26. As a result, coach Joe Mazzulla may focus on developing the team’s younger talent instead of overworking veterans.
Once Tatum returns for the 2026–27 season, the Celtics are expected to rejoin the championship conversation.
