While the Detroit Lions’ offseason has been relatively low-key apart from signing cornerback D.J. Reed, that’s largely because their roster was already stacked with talent. After injuries derailed last season’s Super Bowl hopes, the focus this year has been on getting healthy and letting their strong foundation take the next step. As a result, the most significant upgrades this offseason are expected to come from their 2025 draft class.

One rookie who could prove especially valuable is former Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Tate Ratledge. With Georgia’s reputation for physical, high-level football and tough competition, Ratledge brings NFL-ready experience. His presence should immediately bolster Detroit’s interior offensive line following some key departures.

A Key Replacement for Ragnow

The unexpected retirement of star center Frank Ragnow left a major void in Detroit’s line. While no rookie can instantly replace Ragnow’s leadership and consistency, Ratledge has the toughness and run-blocking prowess that coach Dan Campbell will appreciate. He’s expected to contribute right away and help reestablish Detroit’s dominance in the trenches.

Though his arrival hasn’t generated much national buzz offensive linemen rarely do Ratledge could end up being the Lions’ most impactful offseason addition. In a league where games are still won up front, his presence may quietly be the key to unlocking Detroit’s championship aspirations. Fans should be excited Ratledge looks like a breakout candidate and a foundational piece moving forward.
