A potential new contract for Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt could have significant financial implications for the Detroit Lions, especially regarding their own defensive standout, Aidan Hutchinson.
Watt, who skipped mandatory minicamp due to dissatisfaction with his current deal, reportedly wants to become the NFL’s highest paid non-quarterback. CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala highlighted that there’s a growing rift between Watt and the Steelers similar to the tension that arose during his 2021 contract talks. At that time, Watt was told he was lucky to be part of the franchise, to which he replied, “You’re lucky to have me.” This reflects a broader mindset within the Steelers organization and fanbase, expecting players to take less money for the privilege of wearing the team’s iconic uniform.
If Watt secures a deal that resets the edge rusher market, it could immediately raise the value of Hutchinson’s next contract. As a result, some believe Detroit would be wise to negotiate an extension with Hutchinson sooner rather than later.
Watt isn’t alone in seeking a big payday Trey Hendrickson is also in line for a raise, while Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett have already set new benchmarks for defensive player salaries.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero told Rich Eisen that while there are multiple ways the situation could unfold, the most likely outcome is Watt agreeing to a massive new deal before the season opener on September 8. He emphasized that such a deal would “reset the edge market again.”
Despite former Lions lineman Jon Jansen advising Hutchinson to hold off and bet on himself, the Lions may be better off locking him in now. Waiting could force GM Brad Holmes and Detroit’s front office into a financial squeeze, especially with other key players also due for extensions in the near future.
